What to Expect in Your First Class at Shaolin Arts
Starting something new can feel both exciting and a little intimidating—especially when that “something” is rooted in centuries of tradition. Whether you’re joining us for Tai Chi or Kung Fu, your first class at Shaolin Arts is designed to be approachable, welcoming, and empowering.
Here’s what you can expect when you walk through our doors for the very first time.
👣 A Warm Welcome
From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a member of our team or one of our students. We’ll help you get checked in, introduce you to your instructor, and answer any questions you may have. There’s no need to know anything about martial arts before you come—we’ll guide you through every step.
🧘 A Centered Beginning
Every class begins with a moment of mindfulness. We use this time to breathe, focus, and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for training. Whether you’re here for internal arts like Tai Chi or the external energy of Kung Fu, this calm beginning helps set the tone for your practice.
🥋 Movement, Not Perfection
Don’t worry about knowing the moves. Your first class is all about getting a feel for the art. We’ll teach you some basic stances, techniques, and movements, but you’re not expected to remember everything. Just focus on being present and moving with intention.
In Tai Chi, expect slow, flowing motions that emphasize posture, breath, and balance.
In Kung Fu, you’ll explore foundational stances, coordination, and simple striking or blocking techniques in a low-impact, beginner-friendly way.
You’ll be guided at your own pace in a supportive environment.
🌱 Respect for the Arts and for You
Shaolin Arts is built on values like humility, respect, perseverance, and compassion. You’ll notice that we bow in and out of class, refer to instructors with respectful titles, and treat each other with kindness. These traditions create a space where everyone—regardless of age, experience, or ability—feels safe and supported.
🤝 A Supportive Community
Many of our students describe Shaolin Arts as more than just a martial arts school—it’s a community. After class, there’s often time to connect with instructors or fellow students. You’re encouraged to ask questions, share your experience, and take your time getting to know the rhythm of our studio.
🧢 What to Bring
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes you can move in—athletic wear or loose-fitting clothing is perfect. Outside shoes are not permitted in the studio. Feel free to wear socks or go barefoot. Bring a water bottle, and arrive a few minutes early if you can.
💬 After Your First Class
We’ll check in with you to see how the experience felt. If you’re interested in continuing (and we hope you are!), we can talk about class options, uniforms, and what a typical training path might look like for you.
Most students know after that first class whether the art feels right for them.
🥋 You’re Not Just Learning a Skill—You’re Beginning a Journey
Whether you’re here to build strength, reduce stress, increase focus, or simply try something new, your first class is just the beginning. We’re honored to walk this path with you.
Welcome to Shaolin Arts.
