Real skills. Room to grow.
Martial arts training gives children something meaningful to work toward. They practice movement, listen to instruction, and learn to keep trying when a skill takes time. The goal is progress through their own effort.
Move with control
Practice athletic drills, balance work, coordination drills, and exercises alongside martial arts training. Develop physical skills while learning to move with greater control.
Practice with focus
Listen, follow instruction, and work on the details of a skill. Consistent practice gives children opportunities to develop attention and self-discipline.
Learn self-defense
Study martial arts as a practical skill, alongside awareness and respect for others. Learning to defend yourself goes together with learning responsible conduct.
Keep trying
A difficult movement is an opportunity to learn. Working through challenges and noticing improvement can help children build confidence in their own effort.

Forms, techniques, and practice with a partner.
Children practice Kung Fu forms and individual techniques, learn self-defense, and take part in controlled sparring. Forms connect movements into sequences. Technique practice helps children refine individual movements, while self-defense and controlled sparring give them opportunities to practice applying techniques with a partner.
Athletic drills, balance work, coordination drills, and exercises round out the physical practice.
Learning a new movement, practicing with classmates, and seeing their own improvement gives children reasons to look forward to training. Attention, persistence, and respect are part of that work.
A sash represents what they have learned.
The long-term goal of Black Sash is broken into levels with clear requirements and expectations. Students earn each new sash by meeting those requirements.
Each level gives your child a concrete next step to work toward. As they practice and meet its requirements, they have evidence of what their own effort can accomplish.
Confidence grows from that experience of achievement: working on something difficult, improving, and earning the next step. The sash recognizes the learning behind it.
